WHAT IS JUDOJudo is a grappling martial art similar to jiu-jitsu, but does NOT involve punching or kicking. Judo places emphasis on throws, pins, and submission holds such as strangles (+13 yrs. Only) and arm locks (+17 yrs. Only).  From a standing position, it involves techniques that allow you to lift and throw you or opponents onto their backs.  On the ground, it includes techniques that allow you to pin your opponents down to the ground, control them and apply various chokeholds or joint locks until submission. Judo is a sport, with local, national, and international competition.  It was the first martial art included in the Olympic Games.  Judo teaches discipline, self-respect, and confidence.  Judo is a physical activity that involves psychomotor development of the total person.  Judo is a method of self-defense that teaches you how to protect yourself.

Judo is among the safest of all contact sports. As a martial art and Olympic sport, Judo is governed by the International Judo Federation (IJF), which has set strict safety guidelines for competition. To ensure safety at North Jersey Judo, all classes are held on IJF approved mats and instructed by a USA Judo certified coach.  Most importantly however, our instructor is knowledgeable and always puts safety first.

East West Black Belts at our last Shiai December 2011

I am hoping to have our first classes here the week of the 16th of January providing we get through with all of our inspections. We will keep you updated in class.

Sensei & I would like to wish everyone a Healthy, Happy, Safe Holiday.  We will see everyone back at the dojo on Tuesday, January 3, 2012!

2012 Karate Camp Dates are in Saturday, August 18, 2012 to Wednesday, August 22, 2012.  Look for more information to follow!

I will not be able to attend the Black Belt Christmas party so I wanted to take this opportunity to say Merry Christmas to all of you. I cannot tell you how much I appreciate the warmth of your greetings when I came for the shiai and how much they means to me! I may not see you often in the upcoming years but you will always be in my memories & my heart. After nearly 18 years with Sensei & East West it is a major part of my life. I miss seeing all the new black belts in class and interacting with them. That is part of the fun of being an “old timer” I guess! Again, may all of you have a great holiday season.

2011 is almost in the EWK history books. And what a great year it was! Shia’s, Friendship Tournament, Camp, new ShoDans to the Yudansha Line, AAU, Indianapolis, The Banquet…and many more.
As we close out 2011 and say goodbye to our trusted Dojo and training facility and break in new memories in our new Dojo, lets leave our best sweat on the deck at 155 Woodport Road over the next 7 weeks. Let’s finish strong and build some momentum for the new year. Osu! JeffBB

Congratulations to our newest Sho-Dans!
